Golden Hope Plantations in Malaysia
|Golden Hope Plantations Berhad has been in the plantation business for 161 years. It was established in 1844 under the name of Harrison and Crossfield. In 1990 when Permodalan Nasional Berhad acquired its majority equity it was renamed Golden Hope Plantations Berhad to reflect change in management and a more environmentally sustainable focus.
It was the first Malaysian public-listed plantation group with downstream refineries and activities in oils and fats industry in Europe and South Africa. It is also a founder member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) which comprises plantation companies, industries as well as environment-related Non-Governmental Organizations and interest groups.
It is a strong environmental advocate with global awards including the Forest Stewardship Council Certification (FSC). It is the first plantation company in Malaysia to receive the Global 500 Roll of Honour Award by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) for its “Zero Burning” practices.
In 2002 and 2004 they won awards for while the award for Best Environmental Reporting in An Annual Report.
In 2003 GOLDEN Hope Plantations Bhd and KPJ Healthcare Bhd, a member of Johor Corp, signed an agreement to build a RM17 million nursing college in Kota Seriemas, Nilai, Negri Sembilan. In October 2005, Golden Hope was named one of the “Best Under A Billion” companies in Asia-Pacific region by Forbes Asia, a renowned international financial magazine.
In 2006 and again in 2007, Golden Hope was named the nation’s Most Caring Employer.
In late November 2006, Synergy Drive Sdn Berhad, a special purpose entity with financing from CIMB Investment Bank Berhad, offered to acquire Golden Hope and seven others PLCs "to create the world's largest listed oil palm plantation" company. The merger, the largest to take place in Southeast Asia, was intended to consolidate over 6,000 km² of plantation land.
In November 2007, Golden Hope merged with Sime Darby and Guthrie. The shares were then re-listed on the Bursa Malaysia on 29 November, 2007 as Sime Darby. With the merger complete, Sime Darby is the largest company in Malaysia by market capitalization.
