The Spirit of Aloha

The Aloha Spirit is a well known reference to the attitude of friendly acceptance for which the Hawaiian Islanders are so famous. In the Hawaiian language, 'Aloha' stands for much more than hello or goodbye.

In November we were invited to exhibit at the Wise Tradition Conference www.westonaprice.org and a lot of folks asked "are you guys from Hawaii?"

Bartís Dutch and Iím pure Californian. So I needed to explain that while we were changing over from serving the gift industry to supplying the natural foods industry. We were known as Bright Lights Candle Company but decided we needed a new name to reflect that we were 'going green and natural'.

I was traveling to the Phillippines and living part time on Kauai, Hawaii. I learned that you must recognize the "god of life" in another before saying "Aloha." Itís deeper meaning is the joyful (oha) sharing (alo) of life energy, breath, and goodness (ha) in the present (alo). Aloha is about mutual regard and caring with no expectation. If you are angry with someone, you must cleanse away all ill feeling before saying "Aloha." Aloha is said, and given, freely and without condition or expectation and with the realization that it may not be returned; but it is given without regrets nonetheless.

Aunty Pilahi Paki described it in this unuhi laula loa (free translation):

Akahai - kindness, expressed with a feeling of tenderness,
Lokahi - unity, expressed with a feeling of harmony,
'Olu'olu - agreeable, expressed with a feeling pleasantness,
Ha'aha'a - humility, expressed with a feeling of modesty,
Ahonui - patience, expressed with a feeling of perseverance.

We choose the name Aloha Bay for our company and trademarked Palm Wax Candles - the flame of the futureģ. Our first scented candles were votives, traditionally offered in religious ceremonies of gratitude and devotion (blessing). Our palm wax candles, aromatherapy diffusers, and Himalayan salt lamps and accessories improve indoor air quality (breathing). The word "Bay" is meant to invoke the sense of a safe harbor (healthy home environment).

Our mission is to provide the purest life-enhancing products sourced from sustainable, fair trade, organic and 'natural occurring' ingredients.
